For the Love of the Written Word

"You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book." Dr Seuss
We are a bunch of bookworms over here.
Sophie was an early book lover, loving to be read to as a teeny tiny infant. I had my doubts about Eloise since she was never interested even when I would be reading aloud to Sophie.

But one day Eloise toddled to the book shelf in Sophie's room and began pulling all the books off the shelf. And to my surprise, plopped down and began to open each one and look through every page.

Since then, Eloise will pull out a ton of books and quietly look over them all, sometimes turning them upside down and laughing out loud if something strikes her as funny. It's magical.

I've compiled a list of books we are currently reading that we love and can't get enough of. And when I say that we can't get enough of them, I mean that we read and reread them about 20 times a day!

The Tale of Two Bad Mice by Beatrix Potter

I know why Sophie loves this book so much. She loves saying "the tale of two BAD mice" with a scrunched nose and a evil grimace. She has this thing for saying "bad" but has been on lock down for saying it as she was using it to describe everything, including her little sister. Yikes, I know. The book itself has all the Beatrix Potter charm that I adore and shows that the mice were sorry for being bad and that they even did good deeds to make up for their naughty messiness. So all in all a fun and quirky read!

Dance at Grandpa's
by Laura Ingalls Wilder

This little book is based on the chapter of Little House in the Big Woods when Laura and her family go to Grandpa's for the maple sugaring and the dance. I can't tell you how much of a Little House fan I am without sounding like a crazy person! This chapter in particular was one of my favorites growing up and I would read it over and over. I am pretty tickled that Sophie loves it as much as I do. It will be a very happy day when I get to read the actual book with her in the near future!

If You Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff

We love all of the "If you give" books, but this one in particular is adorable. The illustrations are too cute and the little pig's antics always get a giggle out of Sophie. Also, there are not a whole lot of words on each page so even squirmy Eloise can stick around until the end! (She sometimes ditches us for her little baby couch and her own book. So snobby! Ha!)

One Snowy Night by Nick Butterworth

After 6 months of cold winter nights (ahem, Canada!) we could totally relate to this book! Another childhood favorite of mine, I found it at the thrift store and was so pumped to have found it, even if was only the paper back version. Sophie and Eloise love as each animal comes to the door in search for snuggles. I also do a pretty good squirrel voice that always gets a laugh out of the kids...and Donald!

Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy by Jane O'Connor

So I saved the best for last with this one! Fancy Nancy is definitely the favorite around here! Mostly because Sophie is 100% Nancy and Eloise is 110% little sister JoJo! These books are so pretty to look at and this one is no exception with all the cute puppies and Nancy's outrageous outfits. There are even some funny little details that you might see. Keep your eye out for Nancy using an indelible pen or her visor advertising the local plumber. So fun!

There you have it! A few favourites, some popular, some not so much but all tons of fun for little ears.
